Solo Trumpet with Accompaniment

Sonata for Trumpet and Piano (New)

(Solo Bb trumpet/flugelhorn, piano)
Commissioned by the Georgia Music Teachers Association (2015)
This piece was written as part of the Music Teachers National Association
annual composition commissions project.  It is intended to evoke a more
traditional style sonata with three contrasting movements.  The piece requires
good technique, inluding multiple-tonguing.  The opening movement is somewhat
of a traditional sonata-allegro, but with a modern harmonic sense.  Movement II
is intended to sound like a jazz ballad and is played on flugelhorn.  The last
moveent is a rollicking rondo with a gigue like flair.  It morphs into a straight-ahead
jazz swing section with chord changes for those who improvise and a written
solo for those who do not.  The Sonata was premiered November 6, 2015
by Georgia State University Assistant Professor of Trumpet, Hollie Lifshey,
accompanied by the incomparable Geoff Haydon on piano.

Listen (MIDI version): Mvt. I (excerpt)      Mvt. II (excerpt)      Mvt. III (excerpt)

Suite for Trumpet and Percussion
(Solo Bb trumpet, 1 percussionist: vibes, snare drum, temple blocks)
Commissioned by Anthony Kirkland (1996)
Written for Dr. Tony Kirkalnd, Professor of Trumpet at Mississippi State
University, former member of the the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C.

This whimsical piece is a great addition to any recital.  It features three
contrasting movements and opens with a fanfare that features some rhythmic
challenges, accompanied by snare drum and vibraphone.  The second
movement is a quiet ode that features flugelhorn and vibes.  Finally the
last movement is a lively dance that requires some double-tonguing,
accompanied by snare drum and vibes.
