Irish Suite was written in 2006 for a performance by the Perimeter College Brass Quintet. The performance was to be on St Patrick’s Day and I thought it fitting to use some traditional Irish tunes as a basis for the five movements of this work. Some of these tunes are slightly less common, but I found them to be charming and worthy of a brass treatment. This is scored for standard brass quintet. Trumpet 1 doubles on “Bb” piccolo, trumpet 2 on “A” piccolo in the last movement. Some years later I offered the piece to Michael Moore and the Atlanta Symphony
Brass Quintet as a work to be programmed for a performance at the college. Although they took liberties with some of the tempos, it is a terrific performance of the piece.
Here is a recording of that performance by the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet:
Thomas Hooten and Michael Tiscione, trumpets; Richard Deane, horn; Nathan Zgonc, trombone; Michael Moore, tuba
