Play That Funky Music (5-part, 4-Bb trumpets, 1-four-valve flugelhorn)

$30.00

A fun trumpet version of the original pop song by Wild Cherry.  Written for trumpet virtuoso, Jens Lindemann, it features four trumpets and one flugelhorn.  A very challenging piece, but playable.

This piece was written for trumpet virtuoso, Jens Lindemann and is featured on his first solo album, Flying Solo.  I had the good fortune of getting to know Jens through our mutual friend James Thompson. Jens requested an arrangement of Play That Funky Music written for five trumpet parts, one of which was to be a sort of bass part.  I wrote it for four-valve flugel as that is the only way to get those lower notes.  Jens decided to record it on euphonium, so literally weeks before he recorded, he got a euphonium and leaned to play it.  If you listen to the recording you will hear that he did, in fact, learn to play it and nails the bass part.

Mr. Lindemann also made several other requests (demands) for the arrangement.  It had to include the opening of Spinning Wheel, by Blood, Sweat and Tears; You are the Sunshine of My Love, by Cream, the horn lick to Superstition, by Stevie Wonder.  And, to top it all off, he wanted a quote from the 2nd Brandenburg Concerto, Mvt. 3.  I got it all in there in three minutes.

Trumpet 1 plays all of the piccolo parts.  There are substitute parts for the flugelhorn (euphonium or trombone). And, there are both bass clef and treble clef flugel parts.

Here is a link to the recording.
