McLean has a simple philosophy on composition. “I try to write music that is interesting and thought-provoking, but also entertaining. Hopefully the audience leaves a performance wanting to hear more. Music should elicit a variety of emotions, but mostly joy. My music draws from many sources, including classical, jazz and pop. I want my music to be accessible without being dull or cliche. In addition, my music is never gratuitously complex. It may be technically challenging to the performers, but not for the listener.”
