Sonata for Trumpet and Piano
$30.00
Description
This work was a commission from the GMTA, the Georgia Chapter of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), as the commissioned work for 2015. It was written for Hollie Lifshey, trumpet and Geoff Haydon, piano and premiered by them at the 2015 GMTA Conference at Agnes Scott College, Decatur, GA.
This is a standard sonata in three movements, but there are some fun twists. The opening movement begins with a bold statement and develops from there. The slow second movement features flugelhorn and begins as a slow jazz-like ballad but becomes a lively samba, returning to the ballad at the end. The final movement resembles an Irish jig. It morphs into a medium swing tune and even includes chord changes for the adventurous player.
This would make an excellent addition to any solo recital and would be a great closing piece. It’s not extremely difficult, but does require excellent endurance and multiple tonguing skills.
